Brazil is a country with a vocation for agribusiness, due to its climate characteristics as well as its geographic diversity, possessing arable and highly fertile lands yet unexplored. Given these factors, agribusiness accounts for about one-third of Brazil's GDP, which is why it is considered the most important sector of the national economy. This sector allocates approximately 38% of hand labor in the country and accounts for 42% of our exports, thus having a significant representation in our balance of payments. With the increase in world’s population and the consequent demand for food, it is expected that Brazil will reach the world's leading level in the provision of food and commodities.

With our agribusiness program, we seek to provide a lifetime opportunity: observing closely the areas within the agribusiness sector. From the offices to the fields, participants will have the chance to take part in every division existent in Brazil’s main source of economy. Combining practical activities with theoretical lectures, we will bring the group to the most important Brazilian cities and zones to the agriculture subject. We start our journey in São Paulo - the country’s economic capital and educational polo – following to it’s countryside – responsible for almost 70% of all domestic production of sugar cane. Then, your students will go to Mato Grosso – the state is world's fourth largest soy producer. Hence, the next destination in our itinerary is Pernambuco, where participants will have the chance to observe creative ways to work in order to overcome production challenges that climatic and geographic conditions impose to agribusiness.

SUGGESTED CITIES

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

MATO GROSSO

The economic basis of Mato Grosso is currently the agribusiness. The state is already the largest national producer of soybeans (15 million tons) and raw cotton (1.1 million tons). Moreover, the cattle herd has grown rapidly and the state already has the country's largest cutting herd. The area for grain production covers approximately 8% of the state area, which shows the potential yet to be explored. However, with new technologies that promote increased productivity with efficient use of land and irrigation systems, there is the expectation that the state gets to produce more with a small acreage increase and low environmental impact.

Given these developments, it is estimated that industries using the agribusiness as a source of raw materials are expected to grow in the region in order to contribute to the development of the state.

SÃO PAULO

The State of São Paulo has the largest and most modern agro-industrial system in the country and one of the most impressive in the world. With a tropical climate, fertile ground and plenty of water, its 7.9 million hectares of land are turned to agribusiness, which represents 32% of its total territory of 24.8 million hectares. With competitive terms, the sector accounts for 22% (USD 21.9 billion) of the total exported by the Brazilian agribusiness.

Brazil's largest producer of sugarcane ethanol, the countryside of São Paulo state is also responsible for 60% of all production of the world's orange juice, in addition of having a strong presence in sugar production (304 million tons / year) and beef, with USD 2 billion in exports.
